LUCENA CITY, Quezon, March 23 (PIA) --The Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-PENRO), Quezon will plant more than eight million seedlings of forest and fruit bearing trees in 10,800 hectares land of public domain in the province of Quezon this year.

DENR-PENRO Quezon said the tree planting activity will be undertaken by the office along with five community environment and natural resources officers (CENROs) in the province. The CENROs are the direct implementors of the program.

The target area is divided into different areas such as timber plantation, fuel wood, coffee, bamboo, streambank, rattan, mangrove, community based forest management –fruit trees and protected area (terrestrial).

This is the third year of the national greening program implementation where the goals according to DENR are poverty reduction, food security, biodiversity conservation, environmental stability, and climate change mitigation and adaptation through sustainable development.

This program is based also on Executive Order no. 26 issued by President Benigno S. Aquino III on February 24, 2011 proclaiming the implementation of the national greening program which harmonizes all the greening activities of the government.

The program aims to plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares of land within the period of six years, from year 2011 to 2016. The President himself graced the launching of NGP on May 13, 2011.

Under the NGP, PENRO-Quezon was able to plant 1,876,444 seedlings in 2,700 hectares in 2011 and 1,612,950 seedlings were planted in 3,139 hectares in 2012. (R. Orinday/ PIA- Quezon/ with reports from DENR-PENRO Quezon)
