LUCENA CITY, Quezon, Aug. 13 (PIA) -- Cases of child labor in the province has decreased because of the implementation of the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labor (IPEC) by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Provincial Child Labor Committee (PCLC), averred Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-Quezon provincial director Edwin Hernandez.

Quezon is the only province in Calabarzon Region which has an organized PCLC that oversees and implements programs and projects for child laborers and parents of child laborers.

“The province has a large turn-out of child laborers that enrolled in schools; because of the ‘Balik Eskwela’ project of the Department of Education, almost 2,200 child laborers are back in school,” Hernandez added.

For the parents of child laborers, the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) has implemented Parents Effectiveness Session (PES) to ensure parents know their responsibilities and duties in rearing their children.

The DOLE has provided livelihood opportunities for the parents of child laborers so that they have a regular income for their daily needs.

Hernandez urges support of other government agencies to focus the implementation of their livelihood projects to the parents of child laborers to uplift their living conditions.

Recently, the DOLE 4-A has identified Mulanay, Quezon as pilot municipality for a child-labor free town in Calabarzon.(PIA 4A,Quezon)
